Giving back

The starter slot

Every month I take on one Zimbabwean business at a price they can actually manage.

Applications open · one project selected each month.

Why this exists

Most of my work is for clients overseas. This is the part that stays home.

I learned to build websites and do SEO properly because it was part of my college course. This is that access, passed on: one Zimbabwean business a month, properly built, at a fraction of what it would normally cost.

It isn't charity and it isn't a favour. It's a real project with real work in it. It just isn't a full-price one.

Who it's for

  • You're a business based and operating in Zimbabwe
  • You're starting out, trading under a year or not launched yet
  • You need a real website, not a favour
  • Your budget starts at $400 and genuinely can't stretch to $650

How it works

  1. 01

    You apply

Six questions. Applications stay open all month.

  2. 02

    I pick one

I'll email everyone either way, whether or not you're selected.

  3. 03

    We build it

I set the scope, usually up to five pages. You supply the words and images. I do the design, the build and the launch.

Apply for the slot

Takes about five minutes. I read every one.

The minimum is $400. Above $650 you're better off with a standard quote. It'll get you more.

Two or three sentences. This is the part I actually read closely.

I reply to every application, selected or not.

The small print

Terms

Written plainly, because hiding the rules in a document nobody reads would rather defeat the point.

  1. One project is accepted per calendar month. Unselected applications don't carry over and unused slots don't accumulate.
  2. The minimum budget is US$400. Applications below this can't be accepted.
  3. Payment is due in full before work begins.
  4. I define the scope of the project. Scope is set once at the start and isn't negotiable afterwards.
  5. Projects are limited to a maximum of five pages.
  6. You supply all written content and images. Copywriting, photography and logo design aren't included.
  7. One round of changes is included, rather than the two included in paid projects.
  8. Care plans and SEO retainers aren't included and are charged separately at the published rates.
  9. Starter slot projects are scheduled around paid work. I'll give you a realistic date, but it will be longer than a standard project.
  10. I may feature the finished site in my portfolio, on social media and in case studies. This is the only thing I ask in return.
  11. Applications may be declined without reason. Selection is at my sole discretion.
  12. This offer can't be combined with any other discount or offer.
  13. Eligibility is limited to businesses based and operating in Zimbabwe. I may ask for proof: business registration, a Zimbabwean physical address or a local contact number.
  14. Eligibility is further limited to businesses trading for less than twelve months, or not yet launched. One starter slot per business, ever.
